Ronaldo Becomes Football’s First Billionaire with a Net Worth of RM5.9 Billion
LONDON: Cristiano Ronaldo has made history once again by becoming football’s first billionaire, with his net worth now reaching RM5.9 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index — surpassing his longtime rival, Lionel Messi.
Over more than two decades playing for some of Europe’s biggest clubs, including Real Madrid, Manchester United, and Juventus, the 40-year-old Portuguese star has leveraged his immense popularity through lucrative partnerships with major brands such as Armani and Nike.
At the twilight of his playing career, Ronaldo has now risen to the top ranks of the world’s richest athletes after signing a contract extension in June with Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr, reportedly worth over RM1.68 billion.
Ronaldo’s wealth has been built through a combination of massive salaries, sponsorship deals, and personal business ventures.
Throughout his career, he has reportedly earned over RM2.31 billion in wages between 2002 and 2023.
His landmark move to Saudi club Al-Nassr in 2023 brought him a tax-free annual salary of RM843 million, plus bonuses and a signing bonus of RM126 million.
Earlier this year, he signed a contract extension reportedly worth more than RM1.68 billion, significantly boosting his earnings.
Endorsements have also been a major contributor to his fortune — Ronaldo’s 10-year deal with Nike brings him an estimated RM75 million annually.
Meanwhile, his collaborations with Armani, Castrol, and several other major brands have added around RM737 million to his net worth.
Off the field, Ronaldo’s CR7 empire spans hotels, gyms, fashion, and fragrances.
The former Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Juventus star also owns several luxury properties, including a RM97 million golf resort and mansion near Quinta da Marinha, Lisbon.
Beyond his financial success, Ronaldo continues to dominate the global stage in terms of influence.
With over 660 million followers on Instagram, he remains the most-followed individual on the platform.
While Lionel Messi has also amassed extraordinary wealth, Ronaldo’s move to Saudi Arabia has made him the first footballer in history to achieve billionaire status.
